Straighter Teeth Could Be Good for You

Few of us are blessed with naturally “perfect” smiles.

Every year millions of Americans begin treatment to straighten their teeth. In recent years, more and more adults are doing this as well. Health experts have estimated that 1 in 5 teeth straightening patients today is over 21 years old.

In other words, if you want a more attractive — and healthier — smile, you can have one no matter your age. Whether you are interested in learning about the options for yourself or for your teenage daughter or son, Advanced Dental Center can help. Call (843) 588-1919 to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists in Florence, SC.

Benefits of Straight Teeth

Most everyone would agree that having straight teeth makes a smile more attractive. It’s also why people who don’t have straight teeth sometimes feel self-conscious about their smiles.

We wish we could say this was all in your head, but unfortunately, surveys have shown that the appearance of your teeth can affect other people’s perceptions of you. To look at it from a positive standpoint, people with straight teeth were generally considered to be friendlier, more successful, and more trustworthy than people who did not have straight teeth.

We do want you to know that we don’t judge anyone based on the condition of their teeth. We will do everything we can to give you the smile that you want.

Aligner care can boost your confidence in your smile and your overall self-confidence as well.

You also should consider the health benefits of a straight smile. When your teeth are crooked or overlap one another, you may not be able to brush or floss certain parts of your mouth. Bacteria that create plaque and tartar can get into those spaces, however. That increases your risk of cavities and gum disease.

Having bite issues (such as overbites or underbites) can cause unnecessary wear and tear on your teeth. This can weaken your enamel, which also increases your risk of cavities and tooth infections.

By straightening your teeth, you can decrease your risk oral health problems. You still have to brush, floss, and get regular dental cleanings, but those actions will be more effective when your teeth aren’t in each other’s way.

Ways to Straighten Your Teeth

You could argue that there has never been a better time to have your teeth straightened. In modern dentistry, we have a variety of aligners that can give you a beautiful, healthy smile.

For example, here are some options that we offer:

Invisalign — This is a discreet option for anyone who might feel self-conscious about wearing metal on their teeth in personal or professional settings. This treatment uses clear plastic aligners that are practically invisible when placed over your teeth.

If you are interested in Invisalign, we can also give you a kind of preview of coming attractions. Using the Invisalign Outcome Simulator, you can have a good idea what your smile will look like before you even begin your treatment.

Invisalign Express and Invisalign Lite — If your problems are more cosmetic and less functional, you may be a good candidate for one of these faster aligner options.

Invisalign Teen — You also should know that we offer Invisalign Teen, which has a built-in way for parents and our doctors to know if your son or daughter has been wearing the aligners like he or she should. Invisalign Lite and Invisalign Express are options that can help you correct your smile in less time than other treatment options.

To find out which of these options could work for you, you should start by visiting us for a consultation. We can examine your teeth, discuss what changes you want to make, and answer any questions you may have about our treatment options.

Meet Dr. Visel

Dr. Daniel Visel has a knack for problem-solving as well as an interest in medical care and working with his hands. He is a graduate of Bethel College (a Christian school in St. Paul, MN) and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.

He’s also made continuing education a priority throughout his career. This includes Rondeau postgraduate classes to earn certifications in TMJ treatment. He also has completed classes in implantology and oral surgery.

He comes to our team from his own private practice in Illinois. A big reason he has made continuing education a priority was so that patients from his small town would not have to be referred out town for care.

He’s also seen and been inspired by how life-changing dental care can be. That was true for his patients in Illinois. It was true for the patients he’s cared for during his 10 mission trips to Tegucigalpa, Honduras. We are confident that it will be true for our patients in Florence, SC as well.

When he’s not in the office, you are likely to find Dr. Visel spending time with his family or playing a few rounds of golf. He also looks forward to meeting new people because he believes friendships add value to our lives.
