Three Simple Steps for a Healthy Smile

It would be amazing if no one ever got a cavity and no one developed gum disease. Unfortunately, the reality is that more than 90 percent of people will experience tooth decay and by conservative estimates 7 in 10 people with experience periodontal problems.

We have all the training and technology to treat those issues at Advanced Dental Center. Yet, we also want to do everything we can to help you prevent those problems in the first place.

With that in mind, we have three simple steps anyone can follow to reduce your risk of oral health issues.

Also remember that we’re always here to help in Florence, SC. Just call (843) 588-1919 to make an appointment with us.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Eating healthy is something we all know that we should do, but this can be tough. With all the delicious food you can choose, it’s hard to stick to a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Now, we aren’t going to tell you to turn down a piece of your aunt’s pecan pie. Just don’t eat a piece (or pieces) every day. Limiting sweets and getting good nutrition can help you maintain your smile for many years to come.

Have a Consistent Oral Hygiene Routine

Consistency is more important than intensity when it comes to oral care. Following the American Dental Association’s recommendations is usually the best thing you can do for yourself.

This starts with brushing your teeth twice daily for two minutes each time. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, scrub your teeth on all sides. Don’t scrub too hard as this can damage your gums.

Speaking of which, you also need to clean between your teeth and gums every day. You can use dental floss, flossers, or a water flosser to do this. The important thing is to remove bacteria, plaque, and particles of food from the spaces your toothbrush can’t reach.

Visit Your Family Dentist Regularly

Last but certainly not least, you need regular checkups with a dental professional. You probably try to do the things we mentioned above already. Yet, you also would probably agree that sometimes you don’t eat as healthy as you should. You also may not brush and floss as well as or as often as you should either.

That’s what makes routine cleanings and exams so important for your long-term oral health. Our team will remove any plaque or tartar you may have missed. If you have any symptoms of decay or gum infections, your exams give us a chance to find it early. This will make your treatment less invasive and less expensive, too.

Stick to the Basics

Today’s post is meant as a friendly reminder to either keep up or to renew your efforts to keep your mouth as healthy as it can be. We also hope that will include regular visits with our team at Advanced Dental Center.
