Periodontal problems affect most people at one time or another. Since February is Gum Disease Awareness Month, we are sharing four things everyone should know about periodontal issues.
You also should be aware that we offer gum disease treatment at our Florence, SC office.
1. Nearly Half of Adults Have Infected Gums
According to the CDC, 47.2 percent of adults 30 years and older have some form of periodontal disease. In other words, if you don’t have gum disease now, you are likely to get it in the future.
2. Brushing Isn’t Enough
More than likely, you are brushing your teeth (hopefully twice) every day. That is great for removing plaque and harmful bacteria from most of your teeth’s surfaces. However, it’s not the best way to cleaning between your teeth and gums. That’s why you should be flossing daily as well.
3. Bleeding Gums Are Not Healthy
Bleeding gums are one of the most noticeable signs of a periodontal infection. If they bleed when you brush and floss your teeth, that’s likely a sign that you haven’t been flossing as often as they should.
4. Be Aware of Other Gum Disease Symptoms
In addition to bleeding gums, you should pay attention to other signs of infection:
- Red, swollen gums
- Sore, tender gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Receding gums
- Loose teeth
