Chronic jaw pain and TMJ is quite a different type of procedure because most dentists do not know how to handle that. So which comes first? Grinding of the teeth or pain? And really, people say, "Well, you've got too much stress in your life." Stress can add to the problems with TMJ, but it's not the cause. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. Everybody has one, okay? It's the joint of the mandible that allows you to open and close and eat. Okay, when that joint gets pushed back because of missing teeth, because they're over-closed, because of crowded teeth, and most interesting that if a previous orthodontist took out teeth in closed spaces, a lot of these cases, people will get TMJ dysfunction.
And so what happens is you get nerve compression behind the disc in the TMJ, you get muscle tension, you get headaches, and people don't realize that. So some dentists will say, "Well, put in a night guard because you won't grind your teeth." And I say, "Well, that's great. You grind the night guard, and now you just made your TMJ worse." So actually there's treatments for TMJ to where it kind of guides the jaw forward, decompresses the nerves, the symptoms go away. And then you have to actually solve the problem of what caused it in the first place.
TMJ is a multifactorial problem. Anybody can bring the jaw down and forward and relieve the symptoms, but you can't let it go back to where it was. So the treatment then could be orthodontics, it could be crown, bridge, it could be both, it could involve implants because the bite has to be stabilized in a new position. And that's one thing at Advanced Dental Center that we're able to do because we do all those type of treatments. Some people that come in with advanced TMJ, if I didn't know how to do all of that, they might end up going to three different offices or four different offices to solve each one of those little problems. And here, we can do that all at Advanced Dental Center.

Receive the Right Solution for Your TMJ Pain
TMD has no definitive cause. Medical professionals believe many issues can contribute to the painful condition, including arthritis, teeth grinding or clenching, stress, and a misaligned bite.
Our dentists will likely suggest starting with the most conservative – and least costly – TMD treatment option: a custom-made mouthguard or splint that gently moves your jaw into a position that relieves pressure on your TMJ. It will also prevent you from grinding your teeth, which can lead to headaches and dental damage that requires repair with restorative dentistry.
If this doesn’t take care of the problem, they’ll consider altering a misaligned bite with treatments that may include placing dental crowns or possibly orthodontics.
