Early Detection Matters

The Oral Cancer Foundation reports that the five-year survival rate is between 80 and 90 percent when these kinds of cancers are found in the early stages. That rate drops to 57 percent when the cancer is detected in the late stages.

Risk Factors Affect You

Tobacco use remains the leading cause of oral cancer. Alcohol use also increases your likelihood of developing oral cancer, and HPV is the third-leading cause. Avoiding tobacco and alcohol and getting vaccinated against HPV (if you are eligible) can make you significantly less likely to have this disease.

Watch for Signs

In the early stages, oral cancer may cause one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Persistent red and/or white patches on soft tissues in your mouth
  • An ulcer that won’t heal
  • Growths in your mouth or throat
  • Teeth that feel loose all of a sudden
  • Bleeding from the mouth or nose
  • Hoarseness that doesn’t go away

If you have these symptoms, you may want to contact your doctor.
