Know Who Will You Call In A Dental Emergency

Most of the time, dental emergencies take people by surprise. They can happen anytime and anywhere. You may wake up with a horrible toothache, or you might turn your head at just the wrong time and walk into a post.

Whether you need to stop a tooth infection, fix a broken tooth, or something else, Advanced Dental Center wants to help if you are in or near Florence, SC.

We are open five days a week, including extended hours until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursday. If you need emergency care, we’ll do our best to see you as soon as possible.

Dealing with a Toothache

Toothaches could be a symptom of a cavity, or they may be the result of a tooth infection. Neither is good, and the only way to know what you are dealing with is to see a dentist as soon as you can. If the toothache is accompanied by swelling of the face, that’s generally a sign of a serious infection.

Before you are able to get to the dental office, try rinsing the mouth with warm water. If you have an over-the-counter pain reliever, that may help as well.

Do not, however, hold the pill next to the infected area. That could create new problems.

Depending on the situation, you may need a dental filling, a dental crown, or a root canal to address the problem and restore your tooth.

To prevent this: The best way to avoid these problems is by practicing good preventive care. Daily brushing and flossing, along with regular professional cleanings and exams, can stop gum disease or remove tooth decay before painful problems can begin.

Dealing with a Broken Tooth

Broken teeth can happen from accidents, injuries, or just biting into the wrong thing at the wrong time.

Depending on the situation, you may notice some bleeding. If so, you will want to rinse your mouth with water. Then apply gauze to soak up blood if the bleeding continues. Repeat the rinse and soak cycle until the bleeding stops.

You may want to apply a cold compress or ice pack to the injured area to reduce swelling. Again, you may want to take an over-the-counter pain medicine as well.

If you can find the piece or pieces of the broken tooth, wrap them in wet gauze or a wet towel to bring with you to the dentist office.

In many situations, a broken tooth can be fixed that same time with our CEREC dental crowns. For a deep break, a root canal may be necessary to avoid more serious problems.

To prevent this: You can anticipate every accident that may happen. With that noted, you should be wearing an athletic mouthguard anytime you are practices or competing in high-impact sports. These include sports that involve lots of running, jumping, or objects flying through the air.
